Minecraft Fixing OpenGL Error Guide by Varrkarus
Hey people! If you’re reading this, you’re either extremely bored or you’re having issues with OpenGL mode and Minecraft.
When you run Minecraft.exe, you may come across an error that looks like this:
———————–Minecraft was unable to start because it failed to find an accelerated OpenGL mode.
This can usually be fixed by updating the video card drivers.
Windows XP: C:Documents and SettingsApplication Data.minecraft
Windows Vista: C:UsersAppDataRoaming.minecraft
Windows 7: C:UsersAppDataRoaming.minecraft
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft
Linux: /home//.minecraft
Please note: AppData/Application Data folders may be hidden.
How to show hidden files on Windows XP or Windows Vista
To fix this, please try the 2 methods listed below.
Method 1:
The first thing you should do to try fix this message is to update your Video Card Drivers from your manufacturer’s website. If this doesn’t work, see if there is an update for Java.
To check your video card model on Windows XP, click ‘Start’, then ‘Run…”. Then type dxdiag in the box and click ‘Open’.
If both of these things do not work, please move on to method 2.
Method 2: (Credit and thanks to Reniu87)
1. Make sure you have the latest Graphics Card Drivers and Java version. (Instructions in Method 1)
2. Go to your minecraft folder
3. Delete whole bin directory from game folder
4. Go to desktop (or wherever your minecraft.exe is located)
5. Create .txt file and put in these commands:
java -Xincgc -Xmx800m -jar minecraft.exe
pause
6. Save the file as “minecraft.bat” file and open it.
Now every time you launch the game, launch it via .bat file.
Method 3:
Open your .minecraft folder. Inside, you should find the following files:
minecraft.exe and minecraft.jar
Normally, you would use minecraft.exe to launch Minecraft but since it keeps on giving you the OpenGL error, you won’t be able to access the game. Instead, you will want to open Minecraft using the minecraft.jar file and it should go to the login screen.
Login to your Minecraft account and you should be at the Game Title Screen. Unfortunately, you will have to open Minecraft using minecraft.jar every time since it is the only way to get your game working.
Method 4:
This is not recommended as it may cause minor issues with your computer. However it will not harm your computer, only possibly slow it down. (Oddly, it can also speed it up sometimes.)
The chances of this working are fairly low, but still might work. If it doesn’t work for you, it is best to change it back to the original settings afterwards.
Currently, I only know how to do this on Windows XP.
Step 1: Open Control Panel and then open Display.
Step 2: Open the Settings tab.
Step 3: Click Advanced and open the Troubleshoot tab.
Step 4: Drag the “Hardware Acceleration” bar to “Full”.
I hope this helps, and feel free to post questions and other useful information on this error. Confirmations would be great, as I have only tested these methods on 1 computer.
